GBI Council

Building a Greener Future – One Step at a Time

Step One. Assemble an energetic, knowledgeable team.
Done – Although we are currently seeking more team members!

Our Green Building Council is rapidly growing and currently has nearly 50 members. Click here for the list of members. Leadership for the Council is provided by the Executive Committee, comprised of the following six members:

Chair: Michele Myers, M Squared Builders & Designers, Inc.
Vice-Chair: Bill Beasley, Red-B Construction
Past Chair: Will Johnson, Will Johnson Building Company
Randy Moore, Coldwell Banker Advantage New Homes
Danny Winters, Cimarron Homes
Michael Chandler, Chandler Design-Build

Step Two: Develop a set of local green home guidelines, based on the NAHB model.
Done!

Step Three: Create excitement and awareness by holding a green home tour.
Done!

The Green Building Council of the HBA of Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties sponsored a tour of twelve green homes in the area on May 20-21. Homes on the tour were built by members of the HBA and included features that are among the recommended practices in the NAHB Model Green Building Guidelines. Some of the homes incorporated extensive green components (solar heating, special air filtration, low emission materials, or high efficiency aspects) – while others were typical home designs that were modified to reflect the standards in the guidelines. This tour was intended to give the public a chance to see and learn about aspects of home construction and remodeling from the most basic to the most esoteric. The homes represented a wide variety of sizes, styles and price points, ranging in cost from $180,000 to more than $2 million.

Step Four: Form three subcommittees to carry out the work of the Council.
Done!

Our subcommittees, their chairs, and current projects are as follows:

Verification - Bill Beasley, chair. Implement and streamline the verification process. Review and adjust the guidelines as needed.

Marketing - Randy Moore, chair. Conduct a public outreach campaign, including the annual Spring Green Home Tour.

Education - Michael Chandler, chair. Present educational sessions for builders, real estate agents, and other people who are involved in the building industry.

Step Five: Launch the Verification Program.
Done!

On November 2, 2006, more than 80 people gathered on a crisp autumn day at Cimarron's Glennstone development to learn about the HBADOC's new green building verification program. The houses featured in the press conference were traditional, moderately-priced subdivision homes with plenty of curb appeal. Speakers at the event told the attendees about the program's goal of "bringing green to the mainstream."

Information on the verification program, as well as the necessary forms, can be obtained from the Council's webpage on the HBADOC website.

Step Six: Plan the 2nd Annual Spring Green Home Tour.

More information coming soon! Tour dates: May 19 and 20, 2007.
