COMMERCIAL GREEN BUILDING |
||
Green Globes offers building assessment and certification for a wide variety of commercial buildings which includes new buildings, major renovations / additions, and existing building, operations and management. Green Globes New Construction (NC) and Continual Improvement of Existing Buildings (CIEB) work as a continuum to provide sustainability assessment, rating, improvement and certification throughout a building’s lifecycle.
Green Globes: Sustainability assessment and certification program addressing the full range of market sectors and commercial building occupancy typesOver 150 commercial facilities in the US have been evaluated online, third party assessed, and certified with the Green Globes system. Green Globes has been proven to address the sustainability needs of clients that build, own, and operate commercial buildings in a wide variety of market sectors. The flexibility inherent in the Green Globes system enables it to be used on a wide variety of building types. Client sectors where Green Globes has been applied are listed below: Corporate/Offices The original Green Globes tool was first designed for office buildings. To date Green Globes has certified many new and existing office buildings. Buildings in this sector that have been certified using Green Globes include: corporate headquarters, high rise offices, banks, datacenters, and credit unions. City State and Local Government Several factors have led to the growing acceptance of Green Globes at the state and local levels. These include that: Green Globes is the first and only commercial green rating system to become American National Standard (ANSI) certified; Green Globes is widely recognized in policy at the state, local and federal levels; Green Globes became the first rating system to incorporate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) an impartial method of comparing the environmental impacts of building materials and assemblies. Buildings in this sector that have been certified using Green Globes include: senior centers, state owned retail buildings, fire departments, probation houses, county and state buildings. For details on Statewide Acceptance of Green Globes, refer to the States with Laws Recognizing Green Globes map. Education During the stimulus financing package, schools were given dollars to green their buildings. Schools built or remodeled with a recognized green building rating system like Green Globes can save money on utility bills and improve indoor air quality while lessening the building's environmental footprint. Types of building in this sector that have been certified using Green Globes include: K-12 schools, performing arts centers, higher education campuses, student housing, research centers/laboratories and classroom space. To learn more about Green Globes in Education, refer to the K-12 and Higher Education page. Federal Government In meeting the requirements of the Sustaining Guiding Principles, numerous government agencies have demonstrated the value of Green Globes by going through the online assessment and on-site certification process. GBI has certified buildings within the following agencies: GSA, NIH, VA, and The State Department. Types of building in this sector that have been certified using Green Globes include: courthouses, management centers, federal buildings, laboratories and hospitals. To learn more about Green Globes in Federal Government, refer to the Federal Buildings page. Healthcare There are many complexities involved with sustainability and improvement projects pertaining to medical buildings. Green Globe's flexibility can be applied to a wide variety of medical building types which include hospitals/acute care facilities, outpatient clinics, long term care facilities, medical offices or assisted living facilities. Because of the inherent complexity with sustainability and improvement projects pertaining to medical buildings there are many considerations for facility managers undertaking sustainability initiatives. Types of healthcare building that have been certified using Green Globes include: 21 Veterans Affairs hospitals, laboratories, cancer research centers, and senior living facilities. To learn more about Green Globes in Healthcare, refer to the Green Globes CIEB for Healthcare page. Industrial / Utility / Specialty Building A growing number of manufacturers and light industrial owners are now looking at how sustainable, or "green" buildings can save energy, but can also help to conserve water and other resources while improving productivity and enhancing a company's public image. Green Globes for new and existing buildings is a tool to help them do both. Green Globes CIEB will measure how effective they are now in those areas and outline recommendations for future improvement. Types of buildings in this sector that have been certified using Green Globes include: manufacturing plants, fire stations, transit centers, warehouses and parking garages. Multi-Unit Residential (Multifamily) A critical aspect of the Green Globes built-in flexibility and MURBS is the fact that in existing buildings, energy consumption data is usually not available for building management to document energy performance credit. Because Green Globes does not incorporate pre-requisites, existing MURB buildings can still be assessed, rated and certified, given that sufficient credit is earned with other criteria, including Energy and Water. The same is true of water performance in many cases. Types of buildings in this sector that have been certified using Green Globes include: high rise apartment buildings, mixed use retail/multi-unit residential facilities, garden style apartments and dormitories. Nonprofit/Charitable Like corporations and government agencies, nonprofit agencies and charitable organizations need to demonstrate their environmental responsibility to members, clients, affiliates, and the general public. By virtue of Green Globes utility as a learning tool and its cost-effective, expedient process for third party assessment and certification, nonprofit and charitable organizations are able to demonstrate their commitment to responsible and sustainable facilities construction and operation, while fulfilling their respective organizational mission. Green Globes will help nonprofits and NGOs green their efforts and minimize their carbon footprint, while outlining for stakeholders ways to make their building greener while protecting the environment. Types of nonprofit buildings that have been certified using Green Globes include: museums, libraries, office buildings and performing arts centers. Retail/Grocery Green Globes is well suited to retail environments such as grocery stores because of its integration with the ENERGY STAR® program—which includes supermarkets as a building occupancy category—and because it accommodates different building scenarios by not applying penalties for features that aren’t applicable to this building type. For example, the lighting needs of a grocery store are specific because of the required combination of product lighting and overall store lighting. The ENERGY STAR program captures energy in general, including lighting, while the Green Globes tool emphasizes performance over prescription and allows unique lighting solutions. Types of buildings in this sector include: grocery stores and commerce centers, and first floor retail space in high rise apartment buildings.
